November 2011

Motivated by listening to an NPR program on the joys of Paris we looked at each other and simultaneously said “Lets go!” .

Two weeks later American Airlines deposited us on the ground at CDG

Our Apartment

Pleasant surprise #1 was the view of Notre Dame and the Seine from our rented 5th floor apartment in San Germain.

Situated on a crooked alley a block from the Isle de la Cité, we were in easy walking distance to the bistros, gardens and sights of the still bohemian Left Bank.

Lucky episode   # 2 came because we ignored our carefully complied list the best restaurants and , at the recommendation of our landlord, tried “the place across the street, they have music”.

Boy, did they have music!
Les Trois Mailletz  at street level offered a pianist and chanteuse belting out Edith Piaf and Cole Porter and Spanish music and dance  in the crypt-like boite below. People kept coming in from the street or getting up from tables to take play  the piano or sing.       When in Rome………. We sang and danced and were accepted like family.

It was like a dream, like “Midnight in Paris”. We expected Woody Allen to show up any minute.

During the day we feasted on sights like Notre Dame, the Luxembourg Gardens, the Seine  with its river traffic, book sellers and vistas as well as the usual tourist attractions.

We were thrilled to discover and get a tour  the Theatre  de Paris where Gale’s great-grandmother, the famous actress Rejane was owner and star during the Belle Epoc.

All too soon our week was over. We had to leave the palaces, buildings, fine food, the music and museums.

Ah! But the memories…………………
